Rehabilitation
An essential aspect of physiotherapy treatment is rehabilitation, which may be required in order to re-educate a person to enable them to safely return to sport, work or leisure activities.

For example, sitting for prolonged periods of time at a VDU requires good postural alignment whereas returning to sport requires specific fitness.

Following injury and periods of immobilisation, patients may be affected by muscle weakness and loss of function.

Physiotherapists use various techniques to rehabilitate and re-educate patients, such as:
  • Teaching personalised exercise programmes
  • Mobilisations
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Stretching
  • Proprioceptive training

Rehabilitation Unit
Milligan & Hill Physiotherapy has a purpose built rehabilitation area specifically set up for improving fitness and postural awareness.

The rehabilitation area is equipped with the following:
  • Electrotherapy equipment
  • Dual channel biofeedback connected to a laptop computer for visual display
  • Muscle stimulator
  • Simulated work station set up comprising:
  • Fully adjustable desk and chair
  • Dummy equipment such as keyboard, mouse and telephone.

Biofeedback & Muscle Stimulator
Biofeedback is an interactive aid used by physiotherapists to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of rehabilitation training.

Re-education of muscle activity aids the restoration of posture and control of body movement. Physiotherapists may use dual channel biofeedback and muscle stimulators to assist with this process. When stimulating muscle activity, the weaker muscles may need to be activated or stimulated, whilst the stronger, more dominant muscles may need to be inhibited.

Electrodes are placed along the selected muscles so that when movement occurs, the muscle activity is displayed in the form of a line graph, on a laptop computer, which provides information as to whether the task is being performed correctly.
